This email is for Winston locals; apologies to everyone else across the world! But, feel free to take this as a helpful discovery of my favorite tulip, daffodil, crocus, allium, & hyacinth varieties this year and look for them online or at your local shops!
There is nothing harder in the garden world than willing yourself to purchase a bulb in the summer when you can barely stand to be outside - and it won’t even bloom until next year. But, without fail, every February when I see the late winter flowers daring to pop up around town, I am disappointed in myself that I did not power. through. and. make. it. happen.
I am tired of shopping online, bulbs can be pricy, shipping is expensive, and how do you know how many to get? By the time I get around to it, the prettiest varieties have sold out and I’m left with ones I don’t care much for.
Well — last year I finally planned ahead AND created a Floricult collection that brought over five thousand tulips, daffodils, & crocuses to Winston. You can see some here!
It was such an absolute dream for so many of us that I am doing it again. I am ordering in bulk, directly from Holland, so that everyone can (a) access bulbs easily and (b) more affordably than other online retailers.
INSTRUCTIONS & FAQS
HOW TO ORDER: Email me (lauren@floricult.com) your request ASAP. I am placing pre-orders on MONDAY.
HOW TO PAY: Last year I did Venmo/cash payment at pick up, but this year I am fronting an enormous amount of $ so payment will be due when you order. <3
WHERE TO PICK UP: In Ardmore - at Fancy Groceries or my home.
WHEN THEY ARRIVE: In September.
WHEN TO PLANT: In November.
CAN YOU HELP ME PLANT THEM? Yes, our team is available to book for installation.
HOW MANY SHOULD I BUY? For tulips, if you are planting in bunches through your beds or in pots, I recommend 6 per square foot bunch/pot. If you are doing thick borders or large areas, email me. For crocus lawns, I recommend 1000 per 1/4 acre, but you could do fewer and group a few hundred under each tree.
(1) Blue Moon Mix
Perfect for a crocus lawn. Purples provide depth while white draws the eye. Can also be planted by the handfuls in pots and flower beds. You can see Monologue’s inspiration for planting a crocus lawn. I planted around 700 in my very, very small front yard last year and all my neighbors were obsessed.
(2) Crocus Giant ‘Golden Yellow’
I have these sprinkled thru the pea gravel pathways in my backyard. They are cheery, look beautiful against stone, and the bees emerge to enjoy them.
(3) Saffron - blooms in the Fall
Did you know that this crocus is where SAFFRON comes from?! Saffron is the most expensive spice because it is the little bright orange stamens that you see in this flower. All the other bulbs listed bloom in spring, but these will come up as soon as you put them in the ground.
All varieties I am bringing in are Darwin Hybrids, with the exception of 1 Emperor. There ARE more ornate, fancier varieties — but they do not return each year, so I focus on Darwins. Darwins are known to thrive in the Southeast. They can tolerate adverse weather conditions, and are likely to naturalize here (come back each year & spread). They have tall stems (20-24”), are exceptional for cutting, and they bloom for a full month or more. They are stunning when planted in clusters or en masse.
I have chosen my favorites below - and described the feeling they give in the landscape, especially since it can be hard to choose between so many versions of one color! You may need to review on Desktop so you can see better.
Okay, flower friends! Please email me as quickly as you can so that I can submit our pre-orders. My venmo is laurendubinsky and when you email me your order, we can also arrange another payment method that works better for you if you need.
I will likely do another round of ordering closer to September, but last year many of the best varieties were already sold out, so try to order now if you’re hunting for ~aesthetics.~
If you need help estimating how many to order, there are great bulb calculators online and you can also email me details and I can make a recommendation!
Lastly, if you are not in Winston, I am so sorry! I will shortly be sending ‘round a photo tour of my visit to Longwood Gardens for your inspiration. <3
