hello from my dreary backyard, where i’ve been making tiktoks and installing new beds!
my very first tray was put outside this morning to start hardening off: chinese cabbage, purple lady bok choy, casper kale, red russian kale. you will notice i am not growing many of each — i am trying to do better with succession planting this year, and will be staggering these trays by 3-4 weeks to get a more continual harvest.
this morning in the rain i planted the fava beans and spinach directly into the beds. cute cute.
i have started a little garden log to track all my planting dates; here is what has gone in so far:
BUT FOR THE REAL NEWS.
i am excited to share that i have been working on some gardening classes and workshops, and the first is a true gardening 101 workshop that i am hosting with the backyard bookclub on march 12th, from 3-4:30pm. and this one is FREEEE. 😱 🥳
if you live in winston, you are welcome to attend and i would love to see you.
this workshop is for… people who plan to make 2022 their first gardening year ever, or for anyone who has tried once or twice and faced a lot of failure - and would like to meet in person to learn some of the basics!
the details are… saturday, march 12th, 3-4:30pm ish, at winston junction market. seating is limited so please RSVP via the backyard bookclub.
the goal of this workshop is to…give you the courage to just do it! learn some basic garden concepts! tell you what you really need to know to get started! build an initial plan together with specific next steps! tell you big do’s and don’ts! let you ask questions!
we will specifically cover…
how to select what to grow
where and when to plant things
cool vs warm season crops
succession planting and companion planting
seeds vs seedlings
how to draw a garden plan
tips for amending or creating a new garden area
resources for tools, seeds, soil, & raised beds
and more :)
what to expect… very chill hangs! we will sit at picnic tables in an indoor warehouse-style area, and i will do a mix of teaching and guiding you through a few very simple exercises. please come with a notebook or just a pen and paper. there will be a few 10 minute windows where we will write lists or make rudimentary drawings. you can come alone or with a friend. you will leave with several printouts and resources. i have done a few of these and everyone has a great time, even if they showed up alone and feeling very anxious and out of place. :)
➡️ ➡️ ➡️ would love to have you — RSVP here. 👩🏻🌾
if you are not in winston, do not fear! i will be doing some virtual classes in the very near future so stay tuned.
in the meantime, look at my cute baby crawford bibbs. of all the greens, these are by far the cutest babies — and they are doing so well for only being 2 weeks old at the time i took this photo. 👼🏻
